Can I change the purchased template, save it and use it in a project without messing up the original template? And have a copy of both to use later? Thanks for all your time!

Sure you can! After making the changes, click Add to Title Clips in the bottom left corner of the slide editor. The new template will be saved to Title Clips > My Title Clips, and you can then use it in any future project.
