Can I edit a photo for example lighten the photo once I have added it to the slideshow.

Yes, you can. Open the slide editor and find Photo Filters in the Layer tab. There are all the basic photo editing tools to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, color hue etc., and some artistic filters, too: sepia, grayscale, vignette, mosaic etc.
