But you're quite right, a small image will look awesome in the end if you play the slideshow on a wide screen. So, your choice will depend on where you're going to play it.
If you plan full HD export, 1920×1080 pixels should be fine if you don't plan pans & zooms on the background (using the Camera animation). If you do plan camera zooms, then you need about 1.5 times higher resolution.
